Problem

We have a 2506 mini optical bit-driver and would like to know how to test if the device is functioning properly? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Solution

A simple test is to use a Windows PC and perform a loopback test.

  1. Launch HyperTerminal which is normally found under the start--> accessories--> communications listing. (You can also use a dumb terminal if you have one.)
  2. Use a short 1 foot fiber patch cord and connect the TR to the REC of the 2506 unit.
  3. Use the PC's serial port to connect the 2506 to the computer.
  4. You should be able to press any character on the keyboard and it should appear in the HyperTerminal window. The LEDs on the 2506 should flash on and off as well.

Note that the 2506 is DCE equipment and depending upon how your PC is set up, you may need to cross pins 2 & 3.
