Problem
What type of fiber cable should I use?
Solution
The choice of cable depends upon your application. The most prevalent are multimode (62.5/125 micron)
for local area networks (LANs) and single mode (8/125 micron) for long distance or high data rate wide area networks
(WANs). Typically, for most short distance (less than 2 km) applications that do not require high data rates, multimode
fiber cable can be used for its lower cost. For applications that need longer distances or higher data rates (higher
frequency) or both then single mode fiber is recommended.
